Nirvana’s “MTV Unplugged” show was a career-defining moment for the band

The iconic guitar which grunge legend, Kurt Cobain, used during his 1993 “MTV Unplugged” performance was recently sold for a record $6 million during an auction.

The “MTV Unplugged” show was one of the career-defining moments of Nirvana. During this performance, frontman Kurt Cobain showed up with a retro acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E guitar.

At $6.01 million after fees and commission, the instrument has become the most expensive guitar ever sold at an auction. The buyer has stated that he plans to display the guitar in a worldwide tour, with proceeds going to benefit performing arts.

The instrument was sold with its case which Kurt Cobain has decorated with a flyer from punk rock band Poison Idea’s “Feel the Darkness” album.

The “MTV Unplugged” performance of Nirvana is known as one of the most popular instalments of the series. It was held on November 18, 1993, and the grunge group performed some of their best hits including “Come As You Are” and “About A Girl”.
